The power of SharePoint has brought about a massive implementation in the enterprise which resulted in a staggering amount of unstructured data moving around in the organization which includes documents, emails, IM, etc.

The enormous amount of unstructured data cost organizations a lot of money, effort and time charges. This current scenario has allowed the emergence of Symantec Enterprise Vault which is a powerful application built by Symantec to address this dilemma in the enterprise.

The major features of this technology are as follows:

Automated Classification Engine
Compliance Accelerator
Content Management Connector for EMC Documentum Retention Policy Services
Content Management Connector for IBM Records Manager for DB2
Content Management Connector for Open Text LiveLink
Discovery Accelerator
File System Archiving
Instant Messenger Archiving
Microsoft Exchange PST Migrator
Microsoft Exchange Public Folder Archiving
Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino Mailbox Archiving
Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino Journaling
User Classification Engine

Some of the key features as published by Symantec are:

Policy-based archiving. Move less-frequently used unstructured information from high-cost disk and archive to lower cost storage while maintaining accessibility.

PST/NSF Migration. PST/NSF migration archives unmanaged personal email messages and attachments, enabling IT to effectively eradicate the use of personal store files and regain control of the information within those files.

Electronic Discovery and Search with Guided Review. Through roles-based access searches can be conducted and results reviewed and navigated based on clustering of data retained within the archive. Results can be marked and tagged by reviewers or according to rules.

According to some customers like director Mark Olsen of Mitel; Symantec Enterprise Vault was able to consolidate their emails, information into one single processing. He said the software has allowed them to move thousands of PST files off employee desktops. This has given their organization a 35% savings translating into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Symantec Entperise Vault is useful and powerful tool that enteprise should consider implementing into their organization as the benefits would greatly improve the company both short and long term.

Internet Explorer browser has been hacked

December 29, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

Microsoft have recently announced an important warning about using their default browser, Internet Explorer. Users of the browser have been warned of a flaw that could let hackers gain access to their computers and steal personal data. Microsoft have issued a statement telling their customers to stop using the browser and swap immediately to another browser such as Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome. The flaw was spotted only this week in Internet Explorer 7 however the same flaw has been discovered in IE 5 and also in IE6 which has alerted people who bought computers several years ago. Considering that IE5 was released for the PC over eight years ago, developers have only just discovered the security flaw.

Microsoft are desperately trying to release a patch to fix the security flaw however in the meantime people will have to either not use the internet all together or go and use another browser. The flaw in the IE system allows hackers to access control of peoples computers that have visited a wide variety of infected sites with malicious code designed to extract their personal details and information. Whilst restricting web surfing to sites that you know and trust, the malicious code can be injected into any website which could cause the loss of very personal details. Users do not even have to click on anything to become infected, merely visiting an infected website will be enough for you to leak out sensitive information. Trend Micro who are antivirus software specialists believe that as many as 10,000 sites could have been hacked to exploit the flaw in IE's system. They are known as 'Zero Day' attack because it exploits a security vulnerability on the same day that the vulnerability became generally known within the cyber community. Either way I hope that Microsoft resolve the problem as soon as possible as I myself am using IE right now!
