One very common cause of lost data amongst computer users from all walks of life; being they home computer users, business users or even IT support technicians, is that which occurs following an issue with the machine that prevents it from booting. Data loss is often a side affect of attempts to get the machine working again.

Knowing how to deal with the potential for data loss is what separates those who have been there from those who are yet to experience it. So what kind of scenarios are we talking about here and what are we looking for?

Computer is working but simply won’t boot up properly: Often this can be overcome by starting your computer in safe mode if you know how, and going from there. But this will not always help as you may be suffering from a software issue or conflict or even possible a hardware issue such as a failing hard disk drive.

Computer starts to become slow: When we first get our new computer there is very little on it when it comes to programs and games for example, and over time the operating system due to the way it is designed becomes cluttered. Registry repair utilities can help operating system problems but data loss is always a risk. In extreme circumstances a total ODS re-install is the best option.

Virus or Malware infection: Computer viruses and other Malware applications, if not properly handled from the start, will inevitably lead to situations whereby a full reinstall is the only option to truly remove all trace of the malicious software from the system.

So we come back to how we handle a problem when it arises. How do we prevent data loss when we inevitably have to reinstall our current operating system or upgrade to a new one?

The best way to avoid data loss in the first place is to follow a simple protocol. Backup your important data on a regular basis. There is simply no good excuse for not doing this as external drives and online backup centers are readily available to all.

External hard drives can be purchased in most computer shops now days and a quick search online for online backup will also give you a number of remote back up options

So what options do you have to get your important or vital data back? If things seem really bad and saving the data is crucial, don’t take any risks and contact a data recovery specialist. They will have a whole host of solutions available to save your data and whilst it cannot be guaranteed, they do stand the best chance of success.

We all know that computers can malfunction and valuable data can be lost in the blink of an eye. Recovery data center specialists can store your valuable information. Lost data can cost a company valuable time and money.

If the damage that has been done to the computer cannot be repaired and therefore the data cannot be recovered, then most often the information will have to be reproduced. Before this happens, backup services can be implemented that will store the information for you, in case of an emergency.

data recovery
The time to look for an offsite data recovery is before valuable data is lost. There are many recovery services available that will offer various storage systems to help you recover data. Asking simple questions can help you discern which one will work best for your company’s needs.

Find out exactly how much help they offer during an emergency. Does the service send someone to your company to restore the data or is it all done online? Find out if the restoration process can be handled by someone in your business by following simple procedures or if they will need to contact the backup service by computer or telephone for help. Find out, how often the system should be backed up.

Does their system store the information automatically or do files need to be uploaded during the day. The more ease of use and self-sufficiency of the product can go a long way when you are looking to quickly restore lost data.

data backup and recovery
Take the time to find out every aspect of the data backup and recovery center process that you are thinking of using. You will want to find out exactly how they plan on storing and helping you recover any lost data. This is a service that your company will be paying for and it is important to understand how their system works.

Research different facilities until you find one that offers what works best for your company. In the end, however, the important thing is that you have a hard drive recovery system in place to protect your data.

Recovering Data From Hard Drives

Overview
Modern computer system hard drives can contain a massive amount of data. So when the hard drive fails, and there are no recent backups available, data recovery is the only option available.

Introduction
A hard drive consists of a number of component parts. Each of which has its own failure modes.

1. Electronics
2. Mechanics
3. Firmware
4. Logical

Electronics
The electronics on a hard disk is the ‘brain’ of the hard drive and a single component failure will render the drive useless. Recovering data from hard drives with electronics failures requires highly skilled electronics engineers who are able to fix the drive temporarily in order to recover the data.
There are also electronic components inside the hard drive that are critical for the correct operation of the hard drive and consists of the head pre-amplifier circuit.

Mechanical
The critical mechanical parts of a hard drive comprise of, the actuator arm, the motor and the platters. (There are other Mechanical parts, vibro-acoustic components, filters, VCM Magnets, etc, but these are less critical).

The majority of mechanical breakdowns involve the Head pre-amplifier. Whilst this is not exactly a mechanical failure, the method that the head pre-amplifier is fixed to the head stack means that when it fails it involves the replacement of the entire head stack assembly.

The next biggest cause of failure is motor failure. This is a very significant problem and requires specialist equipment so that platter alignment is not lost when removing and replacing the motor. Main problems with motors are burnt out coils and seized bearings.

Firmware
The firmware region or System Area (SA) is a section on the hard drive that contains the manufacturer’s proprietary information such as

  • ATA Password Information
  • Security Data
  • ROM overlays.
  • SMART Logs
  • Zone Tables
  • Operational code
  • Head maps
  • Translator Tables

and many others

For a hard drive to work properly it is vital that the Firmware Zone is error free. Working on the Firmware on a hard drive is a highly skilled job and requires specialist equipment. Making a mistake when changing the information in the Firmware of a hard disk can render a drive useless.

Logical
Logical problems are where there is no physical problem with the hard drive and it is fully functional. Logical problems are where data has become inaccessible for some reason, for example, the user has deleted the files, the computer has come under virus attack. The skill set of the engineer requires knowledge of how the operating system that the data was stored on works. Also, knowledge of the structure of individual file types so that quality of files can be determined on a bulk and individual basis.

Cheap Data Recovery – Don’t You Value Your Data?

October 16, 2008 · Filed Under Laptop Data Recovery · Comment

Making the right choice in which Data Recovery company to work with can be a bit of a chore at an often crucial time, but getting it right is vitally important to ensure the best success rate.

You need to ensure that the specialist that is handling your data is well trained and conversant with the latest data recovery techniques as drives and techniques do change on a regular basis.

Unfortunately some companies only undertake recovery tasks on an irregular basis and do not have either the skill set or necessary tools to carry out a full recovery of your data.

If the company you choose do not focus on recovery full time then you may bump into capacity problems, so a good question to ask is how many dedicated staff do they have or even can they do server recovery in addition to data recovery if required.

Top tier data recovery companies will be at the cutting edge and will be carrying out their own research and developments Changes to hard drive specifications or new tools are often unavailable so companies need to self develop.

A very good question to ask to test the water is does the company have its own call out service for raid recovery or server recovery emergencies. If they say no you may want to choose some one else.

Frighteningly some companies will only have a basic workbench to recover your data, you want to ensure at the very least they have a certified (preferably certified to ISO class 3 standards).

Most businesses also need to get their data back as soon as possible as downtime costs money so make sure that the company you work with don’t have to send your drive abroad if they don’t have their own lab facilities.

Suffering a data loss has been known to make a business go under but no matter how urgent the situation do your self and your business a favor and make sure you are giving your data to a company that has the best capability to get it back for you.

Data Recovery Things You Need To Know

The computer seems to have taken over the world in a very short period of time and keeping every thing digital is becoming the target for organisations and business around the globe.

It saves storage and space and is more friendly to the environment so we just keep piling more and more data onto our hard drives and storage systems.

Unfortunately drives and raid set ups do go wrong and when they do disaster strikes and years of your data could now be lost especially if you have no back up solution in place.

For a home user this could mean the loss of years of family photo’s as these days we rarely in reality print out all of our photos. Equally you may have other valuable data which has taken you years to put together and if it suddenly goes the loss can be devastating. For a business data loss can be financially crippling.

When a hard drive or server RAID array fails, you need a trusted and registered data recovery operation registered with credit safe and preferably one with its own clean room preferably ISO 3 certified just in case your drive(s) need to be dismantled as a method of retrieving your valuable data.

Many data recovery operations claiming to have been in existence for many years do not have any real facilities facility or track record. And frighteningly many have no background or qualifications to carry out a data recovery task.

Equally they will have no secure areas for making sure your drive does not fall into the wrong hands.

Without correct handling more damage can be done to a drive making what was recoverable data irrecoverable so choose your service provider carefully.

Another thing to confirm if you do need data recovery is where the drive will go if it needs further investigation.

If you are based in the UK for example and the drive has to be sent abroad this will not help you get back up and running in the shortest possible time frame, which is crucial if mission critical data needs recovering.

Business down time cost a fortune so don’t take any risks.

Many IT Professionals will need raid data recovery experts to rebuild and recover the data from all kinds of raid server array and external storage including NAS and San storage drives.

Raid data recovery is an order of magnitude more complex than a standard hard drive recovery and more often than not even a professional computer support engineer will not have the skill set or tools to do this.

In summary always make sure you choose your data recovery company wisely and if you are at all unsure contact your local computer support provider who should be able to recommend a service at the very least.
