How To Make WIndows Boot Up Faster

November 30, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

You’ve done this all before. And got the t-shirt. You have to do something right now on your PC but the screen is blank, meaning it’s turned off. You curse under your breath. You’re in for a long wait while Windows messes around and thinks about waking up your PC. I mean, it’s not like it’s got other things to do.

So how can you make your Windows PC boot up quicker?

It seems like the older your PC is, the more time it takes for it to boot up and start running. You begin to think that Microsoft has shares in your energy company as they appear to want you to leave your computer running 24 hours a day.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce the time it takes your computer to run through its boot sequence.

Windows checks anything that automatically runs as soon as you start your computer. All the essential stuff like Windows itself. Plus all the other software that absolutely must run on your system. Windows Messenger. Apple’s iTunes music program. Your anti-virus software. Maybe a spyware checker. Skype or another VOIP program. Anything and everything you might need. In case anything’s changed since you closed your PC, Windows will go off and check all these programs that run when it starts up.

It is possible to discover what these programs are. But you should be careful – just because you don’t recognize a program doesn’t automatically mean it shouldn’t be running. Some essential Windows services that run in the background have names you wouldn’t begin to guess at. But if you remove them, you’ll be in trouble. The rule with startup programs should be if you’re in doubt, leave it running. It’s not worth shaving off a few seconds on boot up only to have a PC that refuses to work at all. So it’s probably worth leaving this to your friendly techie.

The next thing you can do is clean up the Windows registry. This is the part of Windows that holds all sorts of information about your computer. A lot of this is either needed or at least useful. But removing or upgrading programs will almost always leave traces of itself in the registry. This causes your PC to slow down. Lots of PC problems have been traced to this old information laying around.

The good news is that you can fix this yourself using a purpose designed Registry checking program. This will wizz through your registry, looking for errors, inconsistencies and out of date information. After the scan, you’ll get a simple report and the program can be allowed to go off and correct the errors it’s found. This is probably the simplest thing you can do to speed up your PC. Personally, I let Error Sweeper run every night to find and fix registry errors.

The Windows registry is a database of information. It contains data linked to various programs on your PC as well as the hardware and software configuration. How To Recover A Lost PDF Password

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

PDF files are excellent ways to pass around your documents are they can be viewed on any computer. Not just machines running Windows.

You can also make your PDFs more secure by putting a password on them. So whenever someone needs to read the sensitive information in the PDF, they need to tap in a password.

Which is fine until the moment you need to open a PDF that’s password protected but you’ve put the password somewhere “safe”. Maybe the email is at home and you can’t access that PC from wherever you are. Or maybe the email with the password has been deleted. Or maybe your view was that you always use one of a handful of passwords so you’d not have a problem remembering it. Maybe the PDF password was set by a colleague who doesn’t work for your company any more.

Ebooks you’ve just bought often have a password to “protect” them (I’ve no idea why they do this). For whatever reason, the product’s owner is paranoid and thinks that every customer has the ulterior motive of stealing their product. My personal view on this is that they should get real. After that, I re-name the PDF file so that it includes the password. That way it’s easy to find the password and I don’t have to hunt through all my emails to find it. I haven’t always done this and some files have had to stay locked.

Often you only realize a password has been lost at the last minute. So you need to retrieve the password quickly.

There are a few ways round this.

You can give up and hope that there’s nothing of importance in the file.

If you’ve got time on your hands, you can start to enter all your “favorite” password combinations. Usually in the vain hope that you’ll quickly find the password you used to protect the file.

You can get hold of a cheap PDF password recovery program that will do all the hard work for you and will find the lost PDF password for you in a matter of minutes.

Discover one of the best PDF password recovery programs I’ve found.

How They Make You Buy More Copies of Windows

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

Its interesting isn’t it how companies can build in obsolesce into their products? It also interesting how some manufactures can make more money from the cost of maintaining and running a product than they ever do from selling the original product. A good example of a product that makes its sellers little money to begin with but then rakes in the profit is Gillette razors; you buy a cheap razor and pay through the noise for the blades. You still buy it though as it far too much bother to change your printer for another cheap one and be caught out again.

Returning to the subject of built in obsolescence, this is less of a problem than it used to be when it comes to things such as white goods and other solid products. The reason for this is that manufactures are obliged to supply parts for these products seven years after they stop making them so repair is often now a real option. The area where built in obsolesce really does seem to still be a problem is that of software and in particular Microsoft Windows. The problem that Microsoft and probably a lot of hardware manufacturers have is that most people never use their computer to its full potential so although you can keep making better and better computers most people will never feel the need to upgrade. The most common activities carried out on computers are word processing and surfing the web, neither of which put a tremendous strain on the computer so why would you need to upgrade? And if you don’t upgrade, well guess what they don’t sell any computers and Microsoft don’t sell any copies of its latest operating system. So they Microsoft and the computer manufacturers get round the problem by building in obsolescence.

The first and probably most effective way in which they do this is that they encourage people making software to make it incompatible with older version of windows and older computers. At lot of the time the software being released has been built to put a strain on older systems even though it is often totally unnecessary for it to do so. The second and most shocking way in which the likes of Microsoft force you to spend more money and change your computer is that programs like Microsoft Windows slowly decay over time until they become unworkable, with the computer running slowly and regularly crashing. Most people when their old computer starts to slow down and go wrong assume that the computer is no longer up to the job and go and buy a new one. You do not need to buy a new computer you need to repair the windows registry. What’s the Windows Registry you ask? Well it’s a directory of all the programs and files that are stored by your computer. As you add and remove programs this registry becomes corrupted and your computer starts to run poorly, this problem can be easily fixed with a windows registry error repair tool so don’t buy a new computer make the one you have already run like new again.

SmitfruadC Removal can't Wait

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

Smitfraud is one of those super annoying spyware applications.  While it does not tend to do a whole lot of harm to the computer it does make working on your system that much harder.  Check out this Remove Smitfraud site for more info on the actual removal process.

Smitfraud has many different variants and it will infect your system differently depending on what variant you have. Many times your computer's desktop image will change and you are unable to change it back.  This can be something simple or a pornographic image.  We have even seen a few say tons of curse words and taunt people with statements like “You have been hacked Mother !@#$%^”.

The fake security products that get installed tend to cause all kinds of issues. Besides popping up all the time it also slows your computer way down.  Check out this Remove Smitfraud site for more information on that particular variant.

Smitfraud may not crash your computer but it is a clear indication that you are infected with other spyware as well.  You should take immediate action and get these variants removed.  Waiting will only worsen the problem and deepen the infection.

We are not here to recommend any particular product in this article.  We do recommend you do your research and or visit the sites mentioned above as they have guides and recommended software to use.  One thing we would like to point out for all those that are not tech savvy, is to consider hiring a pro to remove this threat for you.  There are many local shops that can remove this threat for you for around 150 dollars.  If you would like to save a little green you can also consider this online computer repair company.  These guys remove all spyware and viruses for 89 bucks and it’s a U.S. based company.  They remote into your computer and can get you up and going in no time.I know the owner of this company and have them as my own personal techs.

Regardless of what method you end up choosing you need to take action today if you are infected.  If for any reason you do not have protection you should get it soon as well.  Remember no free client out there offers live upfront protection. They do little to protect your computer. The choose is all your and the only person that can take action is you.

Fun Computer Software for Children

November 16, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

Children’s Computer Software is a great way to let your kids have safe, fun, and educational experiences while learning how to be computer savvy. It is undeniable that the computer has become a large aspect of life and communication. Although computer literacy is learned in school, many parents acknowledge the importance of gaining computer literacy early, at home.

Many parents are concerned about their child playing on the computer and learning how to access the internet.  It is important for the parent to supervise the child’s computer time and which computer software is appropriate for their child.

There are such wide ranges of choices that cater to all different kinds of creative minds. They range from all different age groups, genres, and subjects.  If you inform yourself about the many programs out there and find the right ones for you and your child, you may find that children’s computer software does not have to be just for kids.  Nevertheless, there are so many options available. How does one decide?

Look at your child.  Is he or she doing well in school and just needs to reinforce what they have learned through fun games?  Maybe your child needs a little help in math or reading through playing for a few minutes a day with an educational computer game.  You may have a preschooler and want them to get a head start in school.

To keep your child interested you need to consider their likes and dislikes.  Are they a sports enthusiast?  Maybe they enjoy mysteries and adventure games.  Finding age appropriate software as well as software that they enjoy is key.

Do they want to be an animal, mineral, and vegetable? Maybe they want to know more about the stars, or the ocean, or the planet. Do they want to do their own archaeology digs or hunt pirate treasure?  Discussing and thinking about these tastes can insure that you choose software that stimulates the imagination and keeps them interested. If your child is older, this may be something they can choose for themselves or together with you.

Computer time can be a great time for the family to interact together.  Eveyone can get involved in the game.  Your children will learn computer skills as well as how to communicate and cooperate and compete and even lose all within the safety of the home.

By doing some online research you can find sites that will inform you about good and bad aspects of the software you are interested in as well as what age and skill level it is geared towards.  You want software that reinforces good choices and positive learning skills.

After you have done the research you will be able to make an informed choice in children’s computer software. By making learning fun you and your child will both be benefiting.

How To Easily Convert Word Doc Files To Text, Fast And Cheap

November 13, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

OK, so converting Doc files into text probably isn’t the kind of thing you’ll need to perform every day. (If that’s the case, could be you need to leave the house more often!)

Chances are that it’s a sudden need – maybe caused by your boss or your boss’s boss. Suddenly, you’re given a pile of Word format “doc” files that have to be converted into regular, old fashioned text files (the ones with the .txt file extension. Likely because someone needs the information contained in the files but doesn’t need all the proprietory formatting and other junk that Word adds to make things look pretty on screen.

What’s more, they’re needed at once. Like now. Instantly.

If you’ve only got a handful of files to convert into text then the simplest method is to use the “Save as” option in Word. That works OK although Word will warn you every single time that you’re about to lose all the formatting. Yeah, whatever, you knew that already and sure don’t need to be told it every single time you want to save a file as text.

But what happens if you’ve got 10′s, 100′s or 1,000′s of doc files to convert?

Word’s macro option might work for you. Or, if you’re a normal human being, you could spend the next hour fruitlessly trying to get the macro to do what you thought you’d asked it to.

Absolutely the easiest way there is to convert a whole folder or even a complete CD jammed full of Word doc files is to use a custom designed piece of software like Doc2Text. If you can drag and drop files in Windows, you can convert files to your heart’s content. Super fast – in my test, about 150 files every 60 seconds.

Sure, there are other programs out there that do the same thing but they’re more expensive (by an order of magnitude). You can check out Doc2Text for free here.
