How To Make WIndows Boot Up Faster

November 30, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

You’ve done this all before. And got the t-shirt. You have to do something right now on your PC but the screen is blank, meaning it’s turned off. You curse under your breath. You’re in for a long wait while Windows messes around and thinks about waking up your PC. I mean, it’s not like it’s got other things to do.

So how can you make your Windows PC boot up quicker?

It seems like the older your PC is, the more time it takes for it to boot up and start running. You begin to think that Microsoft has shares in your energy company as they appear to want you to leave your computer running 24 hours a day.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to reduce the time it takes your computer to run through its boot sequence.

Windows checks anything that automatically runs as soon as you start your computer. All the essential stuff like Windows itself. Plus all the other software that absolutely must run on your system. Windows Messenger. Apple’s iTunes music program. Your anti-virus software. Maybe a spyware checker. Skype or another VOIP program. Anything and everything you might need. In case anything’s changed since you closed your PC, Windows will go off and check all these programs that run when it starts up.

It is possible to discover what these programs are. But you should be careful - just because you don’t recognize a program doesn’t automatically mean it shouldn’t be running. Some essential Windows services that run in the background have names you wouldn’t begin to guess at. But if you remove them, you’ll be in trouble. The rule with startup programs should be if you’re in doubt, leave it running. It’s not worth shaving off a few seconds on boot up only to have a PC that refuses to work at all. So it’s probably worth leaving this to your friendly techie.

The next thing you can do is clean up the Windows registry. This is the part of Windows that holds all sorts of information about your computer. A lot of this is either needed or at least useful. But removing or upgrading programs will almost always leave traces of itself in the registry. This causes your PC to slow down. Lots of PC problems have been traced to this old information laying around.

The good news is that you can fix this yourself using a purpose designed Registry checking program. This will wizz through your registry, looking for errors, inconsistencies and out of date information. After the scan, you’ll get a simple report and the program can be allowed to go off and correct the errors it’s found. This is probably the simplest thing you can do to speed up your PC. Personally, I let Error Sweeper run every night to find and fix registry errors.

Do I have Spyware on My Computer

November 26, 2008 · Filed Under Tech News · Comment

According to most PC magazines 80% of all computers have spyware on them.Don't start pulling your hair out at this news, most of these programs do nothing malisious. In english that means most of these programs do very little to slow down or harm your computer.  In fact many of these programs such as games come installed on PCs right from the store.

You still need to make sure you are not infected. Most free virus scanners do nothing to stop spyware. Most free scanners do very little to protect your computer.  Read a bit more about some popular threats at on this Remove Virtumonde site or this Trojan Vundo site.  Both sites provide some good detail on spyware and how it affects your computer.

You can still scan your PC for free using many free trial programs out there.  I’m not talking about using a junk client.  Check out the sites highlighted above for a free trial of Spyware Doctor. We love this anti-spyware software. This program is on the top of every computer magazines list.Like many other programs out there you can get a free 30 day trial to see if it's for you.  You really only need one day because the first scan will let you know if you have infections or not.  If not then don’t worry about it.  If you are infected with spyware then you need to take action.

If infected you can google the name of the infection to see how bad it really is.  If you see a cookie as an infection and chances are you will don’t worry about it.  These are harmless little traces that do nothing.

Another good resource is this Vundo Removal Software
site.  It’s a blog about viruses and spyware and worth a look.  Remember do not purchase any spyware software or virus software without getting some feedback on it.  The other thing to remember is no free client on the market provides enough protection.  Most of these programs do not give you protection.  It’s only after you have been infected that they kick in and by then it’s often too late.

How To Recover A Lost PDF Password

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

PDF files are excellent ways to pass around your documents are they can be viewed on any computer. Not just machines running Windows.

You can also make your PDFs more secure by putting a password on them. So whenever someone needs to read the sensitive information in the PDF, they need to tap in a password.

Which is fine until the moment you need to open a PDF that’s password protected but you’ve put the password somewhere “safe”. Maybe the email is at home and you can’t access that PC from wherever you are. Or maybe the email with the password has been deleted. Or maybe your view was that you always use one of a handful of passwords so you’d not have a problem remembering it. Maybe the PDF password was set by a colleague who doesn’t work for your company any more.

Ebooks you’ve just bought often have a password to “protect” them (I’ve no idea why they do this). For whatever reason, the product’s owner is paranoid and thinks that every customer has the ulterior motive of stealing their product. My personal view on this is that they should get real. After that, I re-name the PDF file so that it includes the password. That way it’s easy to find the password and I don’t have to hunt through all my emails to find it. I haven’t always done this and some files have had to stay locked.

Often you only realize a password has been lost at the last minute. So you need to retrieve the password quickly.

There are a few ways round this.

You can give up and hope that there’s nothing of importance in the file.

If you’ve got time on your hands, you can start to enter all your “favorite” password combinations. Usually in the vain hope that you’ll quickly find the password you used to protect the file.

You can get hold of a cheap PDF password recovery program that will do all the hard work for you and will find the lost PDF password for you in a matter of minutes.

Discover one of the best PDF password recovery programs I’ve found.

How They Make You Buy More Copies of Windows

November 24, 2008 · Filed Under Software · Comment

Its interesting isn’t it how companies can build in obsolesce into their products? It also interesting how some manufactures can make more money from the cost of maintaining and running a product than they ever do from selling the original product. A good example of a product that makes its sellers little money to begin with but then rakes in the profit is Gillette razors; you buy a cheap razor and pay through the noise for the blades. You still buy it though as it far too much bother to change your printer for another cheap one and be caught out again.

Returning to the subject of built in obsolescence, this is less of a problem than it used to be when it comes to things such as white goods and other solid products. The reason for this is that manufactures are obliged to supply parts for these products seven years after they stop making them so repair is often now a real option. The area where built in obsolesce really does seem to still be a problem is that of software and in particular Microsoft Windows. The problem that Microsoft and probably a lot of hardware manufacturers have is that most people never use their computer to its full potential so although you can keep making better and better computers most people will never feel the need to upgrade. The most common activities carried out on computers are word processing and surfing the web, neither of which put a tremendous strain on the computer so why would you need to upgrade? And if you don’t upgrade, well guess what they don’t sell any computers and Microsoft don’t sell any copies of its latest operating system. So they Microsoft and the computer manufacturers get round the problem by building in obsolescence.

The first and probably most effective way in which they do this is that they encourage people making software to make it incompatible with older version of windows and older computers. At lot of the time the software being released has been built to put a strain on older systems even though it is often totally unnecessary for it to do so. The second and most shocking way in which the likes of Microsoft force you to spend more money and change your computer is that programs like Microsoft Windows slowly decay over time until they become unworkable, with the computer running slowly and regularly crashing. Most people when their old computer starts to slow down and go wrong assume that the computer is no longer up to the job and go and buy a new one. You do not need to buy a new computer you need to repair the windows registry. What’s the Windows Registry you ask? Well it’s a directory of all the programs and files that are stored by your computer. As you add and remove programs this registry becomes corrupted and your computer starts to run poorly, this problem can be easily fixed with a windows registry error repair tool so don’t buy a new computer make the one you have already run like new again.

Smitfraud has many different variants and it will infect your system differently depending on what variant you have. Many times your computer's desktop image will change and you are unable to change it back.  This can be something simple or a pornographic image.  We have even seen a few say tons of curse words and taunt people with statements like “You have been hacked Mother !@#$%^”.

The fake security products that get installed tend to cause all kinds of issues. Besides popping up all the time it also slows your computer way down.  Check out this Remove Smitfraud site for more information on that particular variant.

Smitfraud may not crash your computer but it is a clear indication that you are infected with other spyware as well.  You should take immediate action and get these variants removed.  Waiting will only worsen the problem and deepen the infection.

Making A Tape Dump,

November 18, 2008 · Filed Under Laptop Data Recovery · Comment

When you have backed up every single night for the last 5 years, then you find that the only time you require to restore the backup, you discover the tape wont load because of a tape error.

So what can you do. There are lots software options for backup data recovery, but most of these only work on backup files, so how do you recover data from a tape?

Data Recovery Engineering Software Limited write software mainly for data recovery companies, and one of their titles is a very cost effective tape dumping tool.

The software creates an image file of the data on the tape to hard disk. Now you can access the data on the tape and recover it with your backup recovery software.

Another use for the software is when someone has created a backup set that you need to access, but it is password protected (not encrypted) and the user cant remember the password or left the company. Or a forensics examiner needs to look at the data stored on the tape but does not have access to the software used to make the tape.
